GIFT BOX ASSIGNMENT

You will be making a gift box to give to someone else in the class. We will draw names on Wed. Make sure that you read what you have to do on p. 380 of the TX and that you bring all the materials you need with you to class on Wed, June 6.

You will design a gift box for candies/chocolates. Draw 2 copies of the net. Use one to make the box and the other to hand in. Write a paragraph about why your box should be chosen (look in TX p. 380). Make a 3D drawing of your gift box. Decorate it. Spend $1-$2 on candy/chocolate to put in your box. As discussed in class, if you don't think you can do this, let me know.

Here are some suggested materials to make your box:
- markers, colouring pencils
- glue/hot glue
- tape
- scissors
- contruction paper (just to decorate, not strong enough for actual box)
- cardboard/Bristol board/ cereal box
- graph paper
- bows, buttons, glitter, stickers, yarn, other decorations

Here are the choices for the english assignment. You can use the computer for any of the options.

Option A - Create a MISSING! poster for Mr. Murry (from the beginning of the book when they don't know his whereabouts yet). There is information about him in Chap 3 and Chap 9. Make sure you include all the information that should go on a Missing poster (look on the internet or at the grocery store on the bulletin board)

Option B - In 4 to 8 steps, draw what it might have looked like when Mrs. Whatsit transformed. Include a brief description of each stage. Alternately, you could do a flip book with many pages and include the descriptions on a separate paper.

Option C - Draw or create a tesseract and draw what it might look like to tesser. Use the information from the book, but also include something creative of your own.

Option D - Create a travel brochure for one of the following places: Meg Murry's hometown, Uriel, Camazotz, Ixchel. You can make a large poster if you want. Be sure to include all of the things that go on a brochure, such as the name of the place, several pictures and many good descriptions of that place. You want to make people really want to go there.

FYI - Plagiarism

Here are a couple of websites that talk about plagiarism. Plagiarism involves using someone else's words or ideas without giving that person credit, or leading others to believe it is your original work. Remember, plagiarism can be intentional (purposely copying someone else's work) or unintentional (not saying where you got the ideas from). Even if you change the person's words around in the sentence, but your sentences are almost the same, it's plagiarism. If you get an idea from doing some research, if it's something that is not common knowledge (everybody knows it) then you must say where you got the information.

We will try to talk more about these topics sometime this term.

We have now finished the Measurement Unit. The next unit is Rate, Ratio and Percent. Over the next few weeks, your child will be comparing ratios to fractions, percents, and decimals. He/seh will solve problems that involve ratio comparisions, and tates such as speed and earnings. We will also be doing some more multiplying and dividing with decimals. In my opinion, these are one of the most important concepts in math.

To reinforce these concepts at home, you and your child can:
1. Look for the use of percents in the media, including newpaper sales flyers.
2. Discuss rates that are important to you and your family on a daily basis (cost of gas, allowance rates per week or $ per job). Talk about what types of jobs might be paid on an hourly basis.
3. Look at different recipes and how amounts would be calculated if the recipe was doubled or tripled.
4. Talk about how to determine how much tip to leave at a restaurant.

Beginning next week, we will be starting a new unit on Measurement and your child will be learning about calculating the area of various regular and irregular shapes using formulas. We will also be learning about surface area a volume of rectangular prisms.

To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these:

1. Look for examples of parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids around your home and in the community.

2. Discuss situations in which it would be necessary to calculate the area of a room, garden, patio, or park.

3. Ask your child to explain how he or she would find the surface area and volume of a rectangular prism. Ask what information they would need and what they would do with the measurements.

4. Compare the volume of various boxes around the house, such as the volume of cereal in different shaped boxes. Have your child measure the dimensions of a box, calculate its volume, and compare it to the volume printed on the outside of the box.

5. Ask your child to explain how the dimensions of a rectangular prism affect its surface area and volume.

The Number Sense and Numeration Unit Test will be written on:

The Unit Test will cover the following topics:
- place value and rounding
- multiplying/dividing with decimals
- multiplying/dividing with powers of 10
- divisibility rules
- Lowest Common Multiples (LCM)
- Greatest Common Factors (GCF)
- powers
- square roots

The test will be multiple choice but may have a short written (problem solving) component as well.

Students should do the required review questions to prepare for the test. Also, students should review and do practice questions on the material that they did not get correct on the quizzes/assignments. There are plenty of mid-chapter review questions and a practice test in the textbook.

Students who are having trouble with any of the material so far should come and see me for extra help BEFORE the day of the test. I can make arrangements to provide them some support during lunch.

Over the next few weeks, your child will be learning about number relationships such as multiples, factors, divisibility, powers of numbers, and square roots. Your child will be reviewing their previous knowledge of the order of operations and extending this knowledge to include brackets and powers of whole numbers.

To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these:

1. Look for the use of large numbers in the media, expecially when they are written using powers such as 3 x 10^8. Discuss what this number means.

2. Find different calculators you may have around the house and discuss with your child how the calculator evaluates powers and square roots. Have your child find out if the calculator uses the order of operations when it calculates.

3. After your child has learned about the Divisibility Rules, give him or her several large numbers and ask them to decide whether each is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, or 9. Ask them to explain how they know.

Boat Assignment - due Thurs, Sept 21
In class on Tues, Sept 19, students will be making a boat to represent themselves. They must bring in their own materials. Boats can be any shape or size but must be able to fit in their locker.

Boats CANNOT be made entirely from Lego, Connex or a boat kit. However, students can use some of the pieces to add to their boat.

Students CAN bring in any of the following items to class on Tuesday:
cardboard, Bristol board, construction paper, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, candy (in a wrapper), magazines, styrofoam, foamie paper, tissue paper, a shoe box, straws, or anything else to build a boat. Glue and scissors are a must.

If they do not finish in class, students can take the boat home and finish it for Thurs, Sept 21.

I have noticed that some of the students are finding it difficult to carry around so many notebooks, duotangs, and books as well as their binder for the day. To help them on their way to staying organized, I have decided to modify the list of materials the kids will be needing for MATH class.
As of tomorrow, your child will need the following supplies for MATH:

1. ONE spiral ring notebook - for notes AND homework, which will be kept in their zipper binder
2. ONE 32 page notebook for journal entries - they will be using this occasionally and can keep it in the classroom
3. ONE SET of dividers for their binder - these will be used to make one section for Handouts and one for Tests/Quizzes/Assignments in their large zipper binder
4. pens (blue, black, red), pencils (at least 5) and erasers (at least 2)
5. pencil crayons, glue stick, scissors, ruler
6. calculator - they must bring this to EVERY class
7. geometry set - the students DO NOT need to bring their geometry sets to each class and will be instructed when to bring it

Your child will no longer need to bring the second spiral notebooks to class. If already purchased, they should keep the second one for later in the year in case they use up the first. They also no longer either of the duotangs.

I will be observing the students to see if this helps alleviate the stress of carrying so many things to each class.

Hello and Welcome to my homework blog!

My name is Miss Kelly and I will be using this blog as a noticeboard for my Gr.7 Math, English and Religion classes. Please be patient as I have never done something like this before :) My intention is to post updates and information from all of my classes to help keep parents in touch with the learning that happens in the classroom. This blog will also benefit students as I will try to post homework and assignments at regular intervals.

I am going to be posting the homework as "HWK Tue, Sep5" so it will be easy to locate the day that you are looking for. Then, each entry will have "MATH", "ENGLISH", and "RELIGION" listed with the homework for each class. If there are any major assignments, they will have their own entry title such as "ASSIGN English Tue, Sep5" with a brief description and a scanned image. To access the assignment, just click on the image! If you would like to locate any previous homework simply click on the date you want under the "Previous Postings" or "Archive " links.
